So the Australian Federal Government is *still* going at it to implement a country-wide, compulsory, ISP level, Internet filtering solution. This is incredulous for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that it plainly just doesnt work, another that the majority of Australians just dont want it.
The big problem is that not enough people are interested enough to make enough noise about it.
To get the best impression of Australians feelings toward internet filtering you only have to look at the ‘NetAlert’ filtering program introduced by the previous Howard govt.
$187 Million was spent on the NetAlert program, so that every household in Australia could have up to 3 computers protected for free. The issue is that I have, aside from finding the actual numbers, is that very people downloaded the NetAlert filter, and fewer still are using it.
This appathy shows the clear lack of the Australian peoples want for the so called ‘clean feed’ internet filter.
So why is the Rudd Govt pushing ahead with its monumental waste of taspayers money?
Simple, votes.
They did a deal with Family First to secure votes, and now have to continue on with the ludicrous concept.
So, coming soon to every computer in Australia……. Slower internet speeds, Higher costs for broadband access and incorrectly blocked sites with incorrectly not blocked sites.
Oh, and all those of you that are fond of a little channel BT can pretty much kiss the open trackers goodby, better start looking for alternatives.
